Leigh CE Primary School

Key transition periods

Before your child starts school in Reception, we hold a series of sessions where parents and children will have the opportunity to take part in a number of sessions within school.  We call these Inspire sessions.

School also holds transition meetings with pre-school providers, the Early Learning and Child Care Team (ELCCT) and families, to share information about your children and start to consider the support that will be needed.

If parents have any concerns or worries about their child starting school, we encourage them to make an appointment with either the class teacher or Mrs Wood to talk through any issues.   Additionally, families are invited to the Welcome Meeting with the Headteacher, Inclusion Manager and Reception staff- this is a wonderful opportunity to ask any questions, share any worries and share information about your children.

In Year 6, once your child has been allocated a high school, transition days take place to support a smooth transition.  For children with special educational needs, there may be extra visits to the high school to meet with the staff that will support them. During these times, pupils may be accompanied by a member of our staff to ensure that they are fully supported in the transition to high school.   Any child with an EHCP will have a transition annual review before the high school application deadline and a representative from the local authority will be invited.

Moving Up days are held in the second half of Summer term every year, to provide transition support between year groups.  During Moving Up day the children create their new tribe (class) with staff and peers.  They will choose a tribe name, create a tribe flag that reflects their values and complete fun activities that allow them to start building relationships with each other.  Additional transition support is provided to children as needed, which may include further visits to their new classroom and interactions with new staff, social stories about moving on, meetings with families and staff and friendship groups with new children.  Staff also meet during Summer term to share information about individual children, including Pupil Passports and Positive Handling Plans.

Information will be provided to any new school (primary or secondary) a child moves to during the academic year.
