Our teaching approach to support children with SEND

 

 

We follow the Greater Manchester Ordinarily Available Inclusive Practice (GMOAP) to ensure quality first teaching for everyone.

Each class has both a teacher and access to Teaching Assistants (TAs) according to need.  

As appropriate teachers will adapt the curriculum, teaching strategies, planning and resources to support all children to achieve so all children can be included and succeed. 

For example, during PE lessons adaptions may be made which allow a child with a physical need to join in with their peers and during English lessons a child with communication needs may be given visual aids to support engagement.  

Additionally, staff recognise individual strengths and build on these in lessons. 

The dedicated pastoral team also work closely with staff and families, particularly focusing on Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs.

Regular ‘fix it’ sessions are held to ensure knowledge and/or concepts are readdressed as needed and all adults in school deliver interventions suitable to needs. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Additional reading and the use of Lexia Core 5, an evidenced based online reading resource
  • Meet and Greet sessions
  • Friendship groups and social skill interventions such as Lego Club
  • Phonics interventions
  • Number Stacks maths interventions
  • NELI and Welcomm sessions
  • The Bucket intervention
  • Outdoor learning sessions
  • School counsellor sessions, including sand therapy, formal counselling sessions, ‘wishes and feelings’ sessions and emotional regulation sessions.

Interventions continue to be revised and improved as a result of regular progress meetings and monitoring.

Differences are celebrated across the school, and acceptance is promoted throughout everyday life as well as during PSHE lessons and circle time activities. The school participates in events such as Anti-bullying Week, and any incidents of bullying, due to SEND or otherwise, are taken very seriously and dealt with according to the school behaviour policy.

Extra-curricular activities are provided in school and all children are encouraged to participate in special events, visits and clubs.  School will provide support or adaptations needed to ensure all children can be included in every aspect of school life.
